Speaking of Archie Shepp, nobody's mentioned Mama Too Tight, which I would rank as one of his very best.ĭefinitely check out Irreversible Entanglements, their album Who Sent You was one of last year's best, and they've got some brilliant live recordings on Bandcamp. I'm a huge fan of Matthew Shipp, his Trio stuff like The Multiplication Table is wild, also his work with David S Ware is fantastic, check out Gospelized.Īlan Braufman's The Fire Still Burns and Valley of Search are great too, a good mix of more melodic sort of stuff and real out-jazz, kinda reminiscent of Archie Shepp's avant-garde work. I'm sure you're aware of Caspar's dad Peter, I really love Tales out of Time, which he did with Joe McPhee, Kent Kessler and Michael Zerang. If you like that you might also like Exoterm, Pulled By Magnets, Grundstein and Caspar Brötzmann. I've gotta second Last Exit, especially if you're into punk or metal at all, it's essential. This might end up being kind of an infodump so bear with me. Oh, and of Ornette's - do you know The Science-Fiction Sessions? Probably my favorite album of his.

Leroy Jenkins, Space Minds, New Worlds, Survival of America. Joe McPhee, Nation Time - this one's fantastic! (Monk tribute album!)Īrchie Shepp, Attica Blues, Blasé /Live at the Pan-African Festival. Anyway:Īrt Ensemble of Chicago with Cecil Taylor, Thelonious Sphere Monk. Also, zheesh, it turns out I have about twelve albums by Cecil Taylor - I had no idea I'd accumulated so many. I just picked one or two per artist - these are ones I own and enjoy, not necessarily what's considered the very best by the critics. I went down to the basement to pick some albums from the free-jazz(ish) section of my record collection. Sorry it's taken me so long to get back to this.
